Fighting for a Sustainable Food Supply Chain
Workshop Session I: Tuesday, May 4, 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Concentration: State and Local Initiatives/Other
The food system emits more greenhouse gases than any other sector (37 percent), and is second only to cars in the use of fossil fuels (19 percent). Changing the way we raise, distribute and consume food will increase energy efficiency, sequester carbon, reduce toxicity, protect public health, and lift workers living standards. This is a difficult transition, hampered by green washing by major corporate actors in the agriculture, food processing, logistics and retail sectors, and it will take concerted efforts by workers, industry visionaries, consumers and environmental activists to win the fight for a sustainable food supply chain.
