Revitalizing the U.S. Rail Car and Transit Manufacturing Industry
Workshop Session I: Tuesday, May 4, 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Concentration: Transportation, Urban Planning and Equitable Development
With proposals for new streetcars in more than 30 cities, approximately 400 light-rail projects in 78 metropolitan areas in 37 states, proposed subway expansions in several cities, and investment by the Obama administration in high-speed rail, we have an opportunity to recreate a railcar manufacturing industry in the United States. As we learned in the solar and wind industries, however, projects on the ground do not necessarily translate into manufacturing jobs. The research team on the Apollo Alliance Transportation Manufacturing Advisory Committee (TMAP) Initiative reports on how many jobs the United States stands to gain in production of railcars, buses, and related systems.
